TEDxPasadenaWomen volunteer spotlight: Amy Kan

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am originally from NY and lived in “the City” for many years after college.  That was followed up by 6 years in London, before settling in Pasadena in 2003 with my British-born husband and daughter.  We followed up with a native-born California daughter in 2005.

How did you get involved with TEDxPasadena Women?
I was introduced to our Executive Director, Heather, by another Board Member, Celina Guerrero, who thought I might be interested in joining the Board. Heather and I hit it off immediately and the rest, as they say…

What do you do as a volunteer for TEDxPasadena Women?

I lead the Branding for this year’s TEDx, with the theme: RISE.  I managed the creative, the print design and the Marketing.

Outside of TEDx, what do you spend your time doing?

When I am not working on TEDx, or working on a job, I like to travel, cook and eat and see live music with friends and family.

Favorites:

TED/TEDx talk?

Amy Cuddy on Body Language is pretty great.  I love that you can directly and easily apply what she teach us about power poses.  I also love Dave Mochel’s talk from last year’s TEDxPasadenaWomen, called “What Are You Practicing Right Now?”  It is incredibly entertaining and inspirational.

Place in Pasadena: Amara’s is right up there!

Restaurant in Pasadena: Union – hand’s down!

Movie: Too many to name but a recent favorite was The Big Sick

TV show?: Again, TV is too good right now to pick one favorite and I am not going to fall into The Game of Thrones trap!

Favorite book: How to choose?  On my business book shelf, our speaker Grace Killelea’s book The Confidence Effect is fantastic.  (I read it before she was a speaker!)  Recent Fiction favorites are: All The Light We Cannot See, A Little Life

Favorite food: You’ve got to be kidding!

What is the best thing about volunteering for TEDxPasadena Women?
It is a huge effort by many volunteers for many months.  I am so excited to see the culmination of it all on Saturday!
